Position: Student Chemical Engineer
Team/Department: Propulsion
Place: DTU Skylab, Centrifugevej 374, 2800 Kongens Lyngby, Denmark
Join DanSTAR: Your Gateway to Rocket Science!
Hey there, chemistry enthusiast!
Are you a student with a passion for chemical engineering? Want to use your skills in a place where chemistry meets rocketry? DanSTAR, the Danish Student Association for Rocketry, is on the lookout for a Chemical Engineer to join our Propulsion team. You’ll be working on cool, hands-on projects that push the limits of student rocketry and get real-world experience in the field. Limited experience in chemical engineering? Don’t be alarmed! We value curiosity and a willingness to learn above all.
What You’ll Be working on:
As a Chemistry Engineer with us, you’ll dive into research and development projects that are crucial to the success of our latest and most advanced rocket, Fornax. Some of the things you’ll get your hands on include:
- Remote Refueling Systems: Helping design and develop new ways to refuel our rockets from afar.
- Cryogenic Propellants: Investigating how to manage boil-off rates so we don’t lose propellant before launch.
- Combustion Efficiency: Experimenting with fuel compositions to make our engines burn hotter and longer.
In short, you’ll be in the lab a lot – analyzing data, running tests, and working closely with your team to make sure everything’s ready for launch day.
About DanSTAR:
We are a student run organization, based at DTUs (Technical University of Denmark) Skylab – consisting of students from across universities (ITU, DTU, CBS). We are dedicated to teaching ourselves real-life rocket science – something you won’t find anywhere else in Denmark! From financial bookkeeping to technical decisions, everything is handled by our members. We’re pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in a student association, aiming to reach further and higher into the sky.
Our Mission:
We’re on a mission to build a small, scalable bi-liquid rocket (Fornax) capable of completing a full flight event, including recovery. This project is about building DanSTAR’s infrastructure, knowledge, and skills for even larger future undertakings. Fornax is projected to launch during the summer of 2025 in Portugal in the European Rocketry Challenge (EuRoC).
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in designing and developing propulsion-related R&D projects.
- Research and test new fuel compositions to optimize performance.
- Analyze propellant properties and solve problems related to fuel efficiency and loss.
- Collaborate with your fellow rocketry enthusiasts to integrate propulsion systems.
- Keep safety at the forefront and ensure all activities follow proper protocols.
- Be an active participant in team meetings and help shape our rocket’s future.
What You Bring to the Table:
- Currently well into studying a bachelor or master’s in chemistry or similar.
- Experience with chemical synthesis and analysis.
- Knowledge and interest in combustion efficiency a big plus!
- Bonus if you’re familiar with propellant chemistry and material science.
- Previous lab experience? Awesome. Passion for rocketry? Even better!
- Independence: You’ll be expected to work independently on your tasks, but don’t worry – at DanSTAR we learn together and work as a team, so you’ll always have a great support system.
- Effort: Willingness to put in the effort is key. We’re a supportive group, but we value dedication and hard work. Expect to contribute about 9h/week.
Need more convincing? Here is why you should join:
- Hands-on experience: Get real-world experience in chemical engineering
- The freedom to bring your ideas to life and grow professionally in the process.
- Collaborative environment: Work with a group of passionate students who share your interests.
- Access to dedicated facilities on campus to work on our projects.
- The freedom to bring your ideas to life and grow professionally in the process.
- Be part of a team that builds rockets! Do we need say more?
- The opportunity to participate in rocketry competitions around the world!
